From Putrid to Profit:
Finding Reusability in Landfill Gas
In 2015, 115 million metric tons of greenhouse gases were generated by landfills in the U.S., according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. While much of this gas was captured for reuse or burned off by landfill operators, there is further potential to capture 445 million cubic feet per day for reuse in a variety of industries. Through close examination of a landfill’s production of landfill gas (LFG) over time, and by taking an outside-the-box approach to finding reuse options, smaller landfill operators might find potential to gain a profit from LFG reuse.
