What to Do With Too Little Water
The world’s population has seen massive growth over the past two centuries, thanks to modern medicines and better living standards. But water use is growing even faster — at more than twice the rate of the population, according to the United Nations.
At the same time, weather patterns are steadily becoming more extreme.
As recently as 2012, 65 percent of the U.S. was mired in drought, a stat pulled from the U.S. Drought Monitor. And while many areas have seen periods of respite, drought has snuck back into the landscape. In February 2018, nearly 39 percent of the continental U.S. was experiencing drought — the highest level in four years.
