Expanding Further to Accommodate Business Growth

In 2020, we opened phase two of the expansion, a new 142,000-square-foot building on our campus in South Kansas City to increase the world headquarters’ capacity by 22%. Since breaking ground in 2018, crews worked more than 134,000 hours on the project without any safety incidents.

Razing the Old to Elevate an Inventive New Space

Using an integrated design-build delivery approach, existing offices on a 14-acre site were quickly and efficiently demolished to make way for the design and construction of a 450,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art office complex and 1,575-square-foot parking garage. With one team executing all roles throughout the project life cycle, the space was completed from the ground up in less than two years — on time and on budget.

Complementing a Historic Neighborhood With Modern Design

For a new apartment high-rise in the Crossroads District of Kansas City, innovative materials and structural shapes are helping to merge the desire to both blend into the historic area while also standing out among other structures. The 196,000-square-foot final building will also boast a 41,000-square-foot parking garage, adding convenience to an urban setting.

Charging Toward an Energy Efficient Renovation

Needing a new home for its municipal utilities, the City of Independence sought to transform a centrally located, vacant building into an inviting, sustainable hub for the community. With an informed, integrated team approach, the 47,500-square-foot complex was designed and constructed ahead of schedule and with cost savings.

Elevating Comfort for Passenger Experience

In need of an exclusive lounge for passengers to work or relax, Burns & McDonnell designed and constructed a 2,600-square-foot common-use club for Wingtips at Terminal 2 in St. Louis-Lambert International Airport. The design incorporated existing architectural elements and created an inviting atmosphere with multiple amenities.

Maintaining Control While Renovating and Expanding a Historic Site

While restoring the region’s century-old transportation landmark and adapting its interior and exterior for modern-day uses, a design-build approach allowed flexibility and control over the project schedule, cost, quality and safety. The project focused on enhancing the visitor experience with a new vehicular and pedestrian bridge, a pedestrian plaza and garden, a variety of renovations throughout the interior, and a new 90,000-square-foot outdoor event space.

Inspiring Collaboration With Open, Tech-Focused Spaces

To showcase innovation within its Information Technology and Data groups and encourage collaboration, a 48,000-square-foot office space was transformed into an open, inspiring work environment, within an aggressive 8-month design and construction schedule. To enhance speed-to-market decision-making and software solutions, the design and construction team created team-based environments with a variety of work and meeting spaces.

Accommodating Rapid Growth With an Expedited Expansion

With a workforce growing faster than anticipated, Burns & McDonnell expedited phase two of its headquarters expansion. Racing to meet the space demands, an integrated design-build approach is executing a four-story, 142,000-square-foot office building with the capacity to house 800 people, increasing the campus size by 22%. It will also include a 550-stall parking garage.
