How GIS Can Help Utilities and Municipalities Respond to Changes in the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule

Summary

The EPA revised its Lead and Copper Rule for municipal agencies and water utilities. Due to this rule change, all systems must develop a lead service line inventory or demonstrate the absence of lead service lines by Oct. 16, 2024. In this webinar, we discussed how utilities and municipal agencies can use geographic information system (GIS) technologies and software to respond and comply with EPA’s rule change. Specifically, GIS mapping software and computerized maintenance management systems can help with capital planning, reporting, public engagement, data management and prioritizing survey efforts. We also explore resources for agencies and utilities to stay in compliance, including EPA’s guide to federal funding and technologies from global software leader Esri.
