Designing Utility Systems to Augment 5G Build-Out

Summary

Cellular networks — especially networks operating on 5G technology — are poised to directly and indirectly transform utilities. With their infrastructure and vast device ecosystem, private 4G and 5G technologies can do more than provide a robust and secure communications network for utility providers. They can serve as a platform for utilities to provide new services to customers and communities. For example, a utility could enable rural broadband through fixed wireless access and access to infrastructure. Also, private 4G and 5G technologies can support devices for local first responders or adjacent utilities, including water and gas utilities.
