Divide students into groups of two and distribute a battlefield template, two dice, and two markers or highlighters to each team.
The first student rolls both dice. The numbers become the dimensions of a rectangle. The student draws that rectangle on their battlefield.
Rectangles may be placed horizontally or vertically but cannot overlap. Each new rectangle must touch the bottom border of the battlefield or an existing rectangle. Students build from the bottom of the battlefield toward the top.
The next student takes a turn, repeating step 2.
Students alternate until one student rolls dice dimensions that cannot be added to their battlefield.
The student with the most area covered on their battlefield wins.
Take It Back to Class
Allow for unique shapes (e.g. L-shaped figures) that match the area of the dice roll.
Use dice with more sides to make the multiplication problems more challenging.
