When businesses and residences started popping up near the harbor in South Boston, Massachusetts, Eversource Energy needed a way to expand in a crowded urban space where flooding and storm damage posed significant risk. For answers, they looked up.

Coastal Expansion Risks

Eversource (named NSTAR at the beginning of the project) proposed a new 115kV electrical substation called Station 99 to be built on Seafood Way in Boston. As the street name suggests, it’s near the harbor. In fact, the proposed site was a network of fishing piers and a U.S. Navy base that was filled in, and it is in a designated Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).
