Burns & McDonnell provided design-build services for a $7.5 million project to adapt Union Station Kansas City for the 21st century, while enhancing the landmark structure’s core function as a regional transportation hub.
Originally constructed in 1914 as a rail transportation hub, the historic landmark was first renovated in 1999 to serve the community with new uses. The 850,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts structure is now home to a world class family science museum, an Amtrak station and a streetcar terminal, among other attractions. In the largest renovation since the work in 1999, the Station sought to further enhance “the visitor experience” with the multifaceted Western Expansion Project. The renovation provided better connectivity between all of the amenities inside and outside of the facility, improved vehicular and pedestrian access to the Station, and added amenities such as a new outdoor concert and event space.
