Enhanced Technologies and Techniques Are Refining Site Cleanup

Roughly 40 years ago, federal environmental regulations initiated many manufactured gas plant (MGP) site investigations, and for good reason. Their findings revealed residual waste with chemical components hazardous to human health still on some sites. This newfound concern led to the creation of voluntary cleanup programs, which led to the development of risk-based approaches to clean up MGP sites. Today, advanced technology is improving conceptual site models, leading to higher degrees of certainty about remediation and the costs associated with it.
